Mismatched cousins reunite to travel across Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn as old tensions within the odd couple are revealed against the backdrop of their family history and their real ancestors settling in the diaspora. David (Eisenberg) is John Milton’s Il Penseroso, and Benji is his L’Allegro, the polar opposites of the former, characterized by Melancholia and The Latter Mirth. David is a down-to-earth, nerdy, contemplative guy, and Benji (Kieran Culkin) is a quirky biker whose joys are worth pondering.
Writer/director Eisenberg never lets any of the characters gain our critique
His advice (above) to David to keep his cool as they avoid paying for a train ticket combines David’s cautious thinking with Benji’s chutzpah. Bipolar nutjob aside, Benji is a funny, intelligent guy—a man too smart to say stupid things and too immature to soften them. The film’s likable soul lies in his character, who connects in an inspired way with the other Holocaust tourists, who help them remember him. But as they tour the concentration camp, barely a word is said: as if the story of genocide weighs too much for words. Only Benji’s words, advising his non-Jewish guide James (Will Sharpe) to find some real emotion in the statistics he offers, make the difference between (Kurt Egyiawan), a convert to Judaism, and Marcia (Jennifer Gray), a melancholy middle-aged woman waiting to be freed from the sadness of her divorce. Despite Benji’s recent dark moment, David worries about his rootless, charismatic cousin. Even more than the balanced portrayal of two very different relatives, A Real Pain shows the emotional payoff of L’Allegro and the grounded reality of The Thoughtful.
This light comedy-drama should be a heavyweight Oscar contender
They are relatives, almost brothers, very different, but they have a Holocaust history and a grandmother, like all of us, trying to understand the horrors and joys of life.
